A breakdown is a gift to a scene. It creates hours of unplanned time between two people who expected to be somewhere else, with nothing to fill it and nowhere to be.
The tow truck is not coming for a while. That is the premise.
The situation you walk into
A dead car on an empty highway at dusk, no signal for miles in any direction. The tow is hours out, the temperature is dropping, and the backseat is the only warm place either of you has.
You are the one stuck on the roadside with her. She is your travelling companion, getting bolder as the night gets colder.
Choose who is stranded with you
The car is not starting either way. Who is waiting with you is the interesting part.
Why dead time is good time
The scene hands you a long, unstructured stretch with a clear physical constraint and a slowly worsening reason to get closer. Restless is the tone, and it builds without ever needing an argument or a confession to move it along.
It is the same engine as the one-bed scene, outdoors and colder.
Build who is in the car
If a particular person should be sitting in that passenger seat, build the character first and the engine will already be dead.
