A stalled elevator is the cleanest setup in fiction. Two strangers, no exit, no distractions, and a clock. Nothing has to be engineered because the situation removes every escape route on its own.
What the scene gives you
A blackout, an elevator stopped between floors, and dim emergency lighting. The help line says forty minutes. She is the stranger trapped in here with you, pretending not to notice how close it is. You are the other person stuck inside.
The character opens the scene already in the dark with you.
Pick who is trapped with you
Forty minutes with a stranger goes very differently depending on the stranger.
Claustrophobic on purpose
The tone here is breathless and inevitable. There is nowhere for either of you to go and nothing to look at except each other, which is why the scene escalates without you having to force it.
Build the stranger
